Sustainable Community Prototype on a Danish Island

Area: 1.6 km2 (160 hectares)
Communication: There is no public transport to and from the island. The nearest port is Kragenæs (Lolland), which is 1 hour away by motorboat. The island has a marina for about 140 boats and a 600m long airstrip. It has a radiotelephone to the mainland.
Population: The island's population peaked in the 1920's when about 75 people lived on it. At present only 2 people live on it permanently, to run the marina and shop.
Buildings: Apart from the lighthouse, there are 8 houses (of which 2 are in need of indoor repair), various sheds for storing agricultural equipment & toilets for the marina.
Land Use: About 2/3 of the island is farmland that has been earning subsidy from EU on set aside (unused) since 1990. The remainder is woodland, beaches, hedgerows, lakes etc. used for hunting of wildfowl. Three pumping stations on the island are used for a few weeks in the winter to keep the low-lying areas dry.
Availability: The island has been for sale for many years. The asking price on www.vejroe.dk for the whole island (except the lighthouse and the graveyard) inclusive of buildings, cars, tractors, boat, generators, farming equipment etc. is € 4.4 Million. All outstanding agreements can be swiftly terminated meaning that there would be minimal restrictions on further development of the island.

Large enough to sustain a viable community, but small enough not to become impersonal, Vejrø could allow energetic believers in an alternative society to put theory into practice and benefit synergistically from one another's efforts to establish a futuristic sustainable community.

Vejrø's isolated position suits alternative energy such as windmills, and offers good prospects for the development of alternative, low energy use housing (e.g. earthships) with minimal legal interference. The nearest island, Fejø, has friendly organic farmers on it and boasts the best pear trees in Denmark. Vejrø could provide a good opportunity for a group of community currency enthusiasts, land reformers and other activists to enjoy to demonstrate the superiority of their new approaches.
