What's the Altruists' Masterplan? How will altruism work?

How can I believe in something which doesn't have a plan?

Do you think the man who made the first coin foresaw the modern financial system? Every altruistic act is an act of faith - just as every time someone accepts money for services rendered, that's an act of faith. Using the money system requires faith in the government and in bankers to maintain the value of currency, thinking altruistically requires trusting in the good will of family, friends and neighbours.

OK. So you've got no plan. What do you guys think might happen?

We believe that material objects were only so good, that most people in 'developed' countries don't need more stuff half as much as they need strong communities, time to relax, freedom to be who they are and enjoy healthy personal relationships - especially, real friendships. If we're right, people will gradually choose to consume less and to do more for their family and friends. As people begin to realise that there is enough stuff to go round, their interest in money will decrease, and they'll no longer let it dominate their lives. We are not pessimistic about the future - we could be heading away from a money-focused, lonely and stressed out capitalist world that lives in fear towards a people-focused, altruistic world in which people spend more time with those they love. Actually, we're working on friendship-centred transaction and accounting systems to offer people a positive alternative.
